While Reading Better Nate Than Ever
Many middle school students grapple with their own evolving sexual identities, fear of rejection, inability to express their feelings, and fear of being bullied. Through contemporary realistic fiction texts such as Better Nate Than Ever, readers can connect with characters like Nateâidentifying with his character, how he is treated, and how he reacts in a myriad of situations. The following activities not only aid students in their comprehension of the story but also provide opportunities for students to have discussions with one another about Nate and his experiences.
As evidenced by the conversation between the students and the teacher in the opening vignette, incorporating books with LGBTQ characters open opportunities for all students to discuss topics often avoided in middle school classrooms. As students read, a teacher can pose the following questions surrounding these topics to begin these conversations: Why do you think Nate is being bullied? Why do people think he is gay? Does it matter if Nate is gay? Does it matter whether Nate doesnât yet know whether he is gay? How does Nateâs sexuality impact your opinions of his character? Are there parallels in what culture teaches us about males who act and Nateâs character?
